On July 20, 1969, the crew of NASA's Apollo 11 made history, becoming the first manned spaceflight to land on the moon. Launched four days earlier, Commander Neil A. Armstrong, Command Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Buzz Aldrin were in a spacecraft landing on the surface of the moon. The world held it's breath as the Eagle 1 safely landed and within hours, Armstrong and Aldrin became the first of humankind to stand on the moon, and to look down at us on earth from the lunar planet, while Collins orbited in space above.
